Vigilance

Newcastle Reform Synagogue - Front entrance

The murder of a father and two of his children along with the daughter of the principal of the Jewish day school in Toulouse, France was the worst anti-Semitic attack in France in the last 30 years.

There is still currently no information indicating a threat to the UK Jewish community but CST -Community Security Trust -is working with the police to ensure that there is an appropriate security presence at all Jewish schools.

The Book Club

February 27th 2012, the Group met to discuss "Homesick", the debut novel of Israeli author, Eshkol Nevo. Set in Israel in the mid-90s, at the time of the assassination of Rabin, the book follows the daily lives of people in a small neighbourhood, in the hills halfway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Eshkol shares with us their preoccupations, their interactions, the way they change; he presents political and religious differences; all with empathy and without judging. Interestingly, the entire group wondered about the title of the book and whether “Longing” might have been more apt for a book, which expressed longing for love, for caring relationships, for professional integrity, for a lost child/brother, a lost home, for ancestors... Thumbs up from the group on this one.

On Monday April 30th

at 7:30 pm, the Book Club will be discussing "I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity" by Izzeldin Abuelaish
